Here's one about a near death, how close to death only he knows, experience our aptly named friend muerte repentina had a couple of years ago. This hasn't been posted before because of the misunderstanding regarding permit spearfishing laws. But now that everyone knows permit is legal to spear in federal waters it's all good.
We were diving out of Homestead with Frank's boat, it was Frank, Speedy, Oscar, myself, and maybe someone else. Towards the end of the day Frank and I were the only ones on the anchored boat taking a break and chatting, with muerte repentina diving about 40 yards away from the boat. All of a sudden a faint cry resonated over the waves "heeelp, I'm entangled". We weren't sure of what we heard so we pricked up our ears and there it was again "heeelp, I'm entangled" but this time we pinpointed it as coming from muerte repentina who was on the surface. But there wasn't an urgency in the cry such as in "aaaaaaaaaaghhh help" so Frank and I looked at each other like :rolleyes1: and should we bother getting in the water. But Frank like a good trooper grabbed a mask and fins and jumped in the water and swam over to muerte repentina.
Here's what happened. Muerte repentina shot a permit. On its escape run the fish went round and round muerte repentina wrapping the shooting line around him with every circle. The line was fully wrapped two times around his neck, once around his torso, and once around his leg. By the time Frank got to him the fish was spent and muerte repentina was too entangled to take care of it in the water, so they just swam together to the boat. That faint cry will forever resonate in my mind Fortunately the camera was there to capture the event.
