Freediving has no real reputation except as a risky hobby while spearing has a very spotty reputation from 'bad press/ PR" stupid asshats breaking the rule (spearing Goliath groupers) and misconceptions about what we do in the first place.
So, if we have a video like this, it takes some maturity on the part of the veiwer to say, 'this is fantasy and it is just a cool thing to watch', just like violent video games and glorified alcohol advertisements.I respectfully disagree, even as a American I have been a fan and friend of many pure freedivers, this began when I met the late Jacque Mayol at the Miami Aquarium in the 60's. His calm nature and skills as a Freediver and spear fisherman set a standard I may never achieve, but I have had a life time of seeking.
I have dove on several (deep for me) wrecks in the South Pacific with only a Speedo, fins, and a vahine in the outrigger just for the fun of it. Some times less is more, and the images will never leave your mind.:D
Cheers, Don
Don, I think I must not have been clear in my origianl post...I have nothing against pure freedivers and Iimagine many of them are incredible peple with amazing stories and attitutdes...I was trying to say that spearfishing has a reputation and a stigma and pure freediving does not, as far as i know.
I think the idea of simply enjoying the ocean in any way is pretty much ideal

Searen,
I like some of your videos from Carolina. I do hope you contribute more to the forum, we are a good group here. Dan will speak his mind and I find that admirable. Particularly with so much phonies out there and the level of political correctness running amock. I do agree with theshred that you came across a bit condescending in one of your earlier posts.
Regarding the video, I thought it was creative. There are so many underwater videos out there that I can't keep track. I personally like to see some action in the way of fish being impaled, but not averse to watching these types. I think it was clearly done to have fun and promote PFI, which there is nothing wrong with that.
Sdeisen,
When I first saw that post of Tina, I thought Dan was sharing our conversations. Obviously not the case with his later post. Bizarre how this came up after briefly talking about it and singing and humming the tune.

Most people think freedivers are crazy or have killed too many braincells from breath holds and black outs.:@ When I am in the pool training; I get a lot of people noticing what I am doing and then asking "why?"
We have a stigma,too-- just for a different reason. And many freedivers are spearfisherman, too .Some of us started out that way then decided to see how far we could push our limits. It becomes an over-powering urge to go deeper and test your body - it's an incredible rush !:D
I urge any of you to give it a try sometime-- in a safe situation only- of course! We need more USA divers on the team and you already have a head start. -
I am a freediver, no question, just not a very deep diver
I always find myself defending FD's to scuba guys cos they don't get it at all and do think all of us are crazy yahoo's with death wishes.... I hope I was clear. I have nothing against anyone who is enjoying the ocean in a responsible way.

My motivation for freediving is to be able to hit those massively humongous fish in 100+ feet! Oh, and to be able to mess with bubble blowers like that Blessum guy did on spearboard! That was classic!:thumbsup2:
Plus, its pretty much the only form of excercise that I get nowadays lol!
-
you must be super stoked for your class coming up huh?
-
btw,,,blessum is now aboard here as Paul...say hello
-
Haha I forgot I was in this video

Having dove the Vandy on air, I thought it was pretty cool. You have to view it for what it is....an attempt to correograph the impossible so that it looked real. No one was duped. They explained what and how they did it in the end sequences.
But how did they hold their breath for so long?

Entertaining.

Two year old thread BTW.

It does seem a little, oh well,I guess am more of a SPEARDIVER than a free-diver.I saw a couple of big ones go by,wishing they had a gun.:D
