sdeisen little fish reports

  • I got to the beach in boca today after class
and their were a bunch of people with cameras at the beach, i walked up and every 5-20 seconds you could see a spinner shark jump and twist and splash. it was pretty awesome to watch. so i loaded the yak and paddled out to the reef and the whole way the sharks were jumping all around the yak and you could hear the splashes when u couldnt see themm. when i got in the water it was solid bait and when swimming above them and through them you could see them flashh and a solid wall of the bait would shift and turn away from where the sharks were circling in closer along the ooutside of the ball. im still too excited to explain it all properly,, :D
anyways i left the gun in the yak and just dove amongst all the fun for two hoours until it got dark.
also as i was packing up the yak before pulling up anchor a dolphin almost scared me over the side it passed so close,, then it and a ton of its buddies swam right along with th yak as i paddled south until i had to turn perpendicular towards the beach and split

a picture a guy took today where i was, i gave him my email and he sent it to me, he said he was trying to get one of me with a shark jumping over the yak jajaja

  • Cool report, I love the spinner image, I could see the bait wall in my mind, I dig days like that.

  • Can you imagine if they start jumping and spinning like that when speared. It would be unusual to play them with the float line.

Is this the annual migration I heard on the news before? Is it made up mostly of these spinner sharks? I've never been in the water around something like that. Did you feel any risk diving among them, that there would be another kind of shark around? Or does their presence indicate the contrary?

  • this is the annual migration, and i think its all spinner sharks, but the guy who took the ppicture claimed he saw black tips too. in the water they were just very very fast around the bait fish which was nerve racking,, but i also got the feeling they wanted to keep distance. its the first time ive ever really been so constantly aware of sharks around. i dont thinnk their presence affects other sharks because they were all very high up in the water column. all the reef fish were still out and about as if nothing was different

  • upon reading the report again I have to say it sounds like one of the coolest days ever.

I was so enamoured witht he bait image and the flying sharks that I didnt appreciate how sweet that dolphin cruise must have been...sounds like a very special day indeed..very glad it was someone like you steve who could enjoy it properly and was willing to share.

did you have to interact with any of the sharks or were they more interested in the ample bait shoals?

    i like to spear fish

  • thanks a lot judah, the dolphin were great because they went the same pace as me once they realized i was sticking with them. ,, i didnt really interact with the sharks at all, they were jsut constanly so close hitting the bait

  • Pretty amazing man, swimming in balls of bait like that is always a strange but awesome experience. I saw a massive number of ballyhoo being slammed by a huge school of jack at the beach Saturday; they where chasing them up onto the shore and bubbling the water.

I am hoping to do a dive (scuba) with some lemon sharks next month as there annual migration is now as well. I have done this before and it was pretty epic. Glad you got to experience that. :thumbsup2:

  • I heard today that the blacktip migration is going on now as well. my friend is fishing a blacktip tournament at the end of february so there are still days for the rest of us to get out and see such a phenomenon
