New 53'' mahogany

  • Here's something I build on my spare time over the last couple of weeks.
Specs: 53'' mahogany rear handle open track
    neptonics reef mech (thanks Dan)
nile tech handle and trigger guard
    riffe line anchor and guide
    shoots a 57'' shaft
three coats of ''special prototype flex epoxy''

  • To tell you the truth, I don't know yet probably two 5/8's. I still ned to balance it but still waiting on the shaft. I used a shaft from Roberto Reyes that he lent me for mock up.

BTW it is from the same wood that I sent you!

  • Beautiful.

You used a bit of hardware from every manufacturer so no one feels left out LOL

What is the stock height and width? Is it laminated? Why the muzzle shape? What is this special epoxy? What was it like to put on? What is that recessed area around the line release arm?

  • Beautiful.

    Thanks for the compliments.
Stock height is 1-1/2 inches, width is 1-7/8''. Five 1/2'' laminations ( before routing stock ) 4 vertical, 1 horizontal on bottom ( people usually put it on top only to split it in half with the track ) G- FLEX epoxy for lams. Muzzle shape just to try something a little different. ''Special epoxy'' is trade secret :D if it works I let you know what is it, but it is real easy to brush on. I mix it with xylene 50-50. The area around the line release is actually a cover for the homemade self setting spring in case it needs to be replaced.

  • Billy, is that the color mahogany takes with clear epoxy or did you add something to it? I find it to be getting close to burgundy and it's very nice.

Another detail I just noticed is that you angled slightly the area where the handle is attached. This in turn gives the handle a little more angle backwards which is what I like. I find all aftermarket handles lack in this and that's why I don't use them. Looks like your way minimized this issue, well done. I was considering doing this angle on my last gun but was worried that I'll calculate something bad and things will not line up.

It is clear epoxy, the gun looks real nice in the sun. There is lighter and darker colors in the same plank of mahogany and also there is different kinds of mahogany. If you notice there are light and dark lams that were cut from the same board of wood.

    I just noticed you edited your post;

Yes the angle in the back serves two purposes, one it gives a better angle for the handle and also raises it a bit to be a little in line with the shaft. Just wait to see the rear handle euro that's coming next with a sharper angle on the back. I need that damn trigger.....

  • Thanks guys.

sdeisen, after rough cuttin the handle scales I bolt them to the handle one at time on it's respective side and finish the cut in the router table with a flush trim bit with bearing. Final shaping is done by rounding off the edges and some wood filing and sanding by hand.

  • Beautiful lines, I too like the soft taper at the bottom of the handle and that grain and color is very rich.

    Great job mate.

i agree, if you split it in half there is no point in going through the trouble of t lam.
