Solo again today. I hoped that todays viz would be at least as good as yesterdays 50f, so I paddled all the way out to the 3rd. Dropped anchor and jumped in and could just make out the reef from the sand in 55fsw :( I blind dropped for 2 hours then gave up and went in to the 2nd reef north of where Putmeincoach an his buddy was spearin. I saw no shootable fish on the 2nd reef. Putmeincoach an buddy got some fish an bugs. Hope Putmeincoach posts up his story.
I got 3 fish in 4 1/2 hours of swimming, but today was a beautiful day on the water to yak freedive spearfish

PS--here is what NOAA forecast---TODAY-NORTH WINDS 7 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 3 TO 5 FEET. DOMINANT PERIOD 7 SECONDS.
    THURSDAY--NORTHEAST WINDS 14 TO 17 KNOTS. SEAS 5 TO 7 FEET. DOMINANT PERIOD 9 SECONDS. <img src= " class="smiley" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x" height="23" width="23" loading="eager" data-tooltip="biggrin" aria-label="biggrin">

  • LunkerBuster--the best thing I ever did to increase the number of days I spear was to get a night job AND move to an ocean front condo. That way I never have to depend on the forecast and I know first hand what the sea conditions are. I got this condo for near to the exact same price per month as a non-ocean front.
    Hope this helps

  • Yesterday was beautiful- your're right the office came within an inch of getting a sick day call---and then of course the wind picked back up again today. Not to mention a 9-5 w/ daylightsavings = no bueno for spearo

Today was NOT a yak /freedive/spearfishing 101 level day
Beach surf was 4f on ENTRY. Viz started out at crap and got worse by the minute. I saw 1 shootable fish all day an he died.
On entry, I watched an waited till I thought I had the break timed right. I pushed off the beach and got 2 paddle stroke before the first 4f wave broke over the prow of my yak and hit me in the chest so hard it bent me backwards in the seat. Luckely I kept my paddle and was able to turn my scupper into the next wave. The water couldn't run out of the scupper holes fast enough to clear between waves but I kept pressing westward and finally got out of the beach surge.
Great, now I was out there and had lost no gear. I got where I wanted to go, anchored and jumped in in 20FSW an couldn't even see the bottom
I swam for hours and shot 1 mac that I surprised in the murk and now it was time to go BACK in through the surf. By now the surf line and beach had surfers everywhere, not a good sign for a yaker. I decided on a different approach which was to pick the biggest wave and ride it all the way in to the beach.
I hung out until the surfers on each side of me started paddeling to catch the wave an I started paddeling like hell and away we all went :surfing:
I lucked out and rode it all the way in to the sand without dumping AND without running over a surfer :)

Today was a good day. Got off work and pushed my yak out to sea by 830.
Paddled out though 3f beach surf and saw that the viz was better than good on the first reef so I kept going. When I got to the second reef the viz actually looked better as I looked down into the water so I headed East. I got to the 3rd reef and still had viz so I paddled around until I was happy and then dropped anchor, geared up and slipped over the side. As soon as I jumped in 2 macs drifted by and watched me until I almost had the gun loaded then they drifted away before the gun was ready
I made a couple of partial drops to clear my head and ears, then got serious, breathed up and dropped to 55f as the first hog came across the sand to the reef. I love it when those hogs tilt over on their sides and watch me coming <img src= " height="23" srcset="https://spearfishing.world/forum/images/smilies/emojione/1f606@2x.png 2x">
Anyway, ended with 5 hogs and 3 macs and saw a 4f Manta ray.

Today was a good day. Got off work and pushed my yak out to sea by 830.
Paddled to the first reef and spent an hour or two there. Then it quit raining and the wind and the seas layed a little so I started swimming East
I was out in the middle of nowhere between the 2nd and 3rd, looked down an saw a bigger fish on the bottom followed by some bottom feeders. I watched and waited trying to figure out what the bigger fish was as he was directly below me in 45fsw. Finally I realized it was a big hog :@, so I took a short breath-up, had my yak anchor in my left hand and my ETPG gun in my right hand and down I started. With the anchor in my hand I was going faster and faster straight for the bottom This hog must have never seen a spearo, cause when I was about 8f away he slowly rolled on his side to look at me dropping at a high rate of speed. I could not believe it as my spear hit him just behind the gill an pinned him to the bottom:thumbup:
He measured 22in and was as fat as a Thanksgiving turkey :)

  • Dan-- I have some iphone pictures of todays hog and will post them ASAP. I sent pictures to sdeisen and Scott.
I am very lucky equalizing as I hardly ever even think about equalizing. I just head down and start swallowing. I cannot remember using my hands to equalize. Also, almost all my dives are 65fsw or less

  • Hau,

I equalize the same way all the way to 100ft. I haven't tried deeper yet with no hands.

Today WAS NOT a level 101 yak spearin day
Another yak spearo talked to me before I shoved off through the 4f beach surf. After he saw how much of a beating I took getting out through the surf, he just got in his van and drove off  :)
But getting out proved to be the hardest part. I just went to the first reef as the seas were 4-5f even that close to shore. As soon as I slid over the side the viz was ok and there was almost no current and the world around me seemed to become more calm. I swam for hours without seeing a shootable fish (thanks Putmeincoach :poke: :)), but I ended with 1 hog and 1 porgy.
Next came the yak beach landing in 4-5f surf.:@
Another spearo was not lucky and lost gear when his yak rolled. :(
I lucked out and picked a big wave far out and yak surfed it all the way in to the sand.
