Shyt happens man! anyone knows if there was there a dive flag up? and how far from the boat was he?
I can remember a few close calls and it serves as a reminder of "safety first!" Watch your ass at all times and try to anticipate the usual things that can go wrong. It is good to share all these stories as it serves to increase safety awareness for all of us.

I'm a reel guy and it works fine in all conditions here in FL, but after getting rushed by a big bull I'm really starting to like the idea of having the stringer away from me, as well as the additional safety of having a dive flag & float attached.

You sly devil, you!

I would have bagged him with a dirty thumb shot!

Sweet vid as usual Harry !
Jim nice story! The mack were missing in action Gulf side Sunday - so we popped over to the Atlantic and hit a wreck in about 40 for a little bit. Hit my first big 'cuda and some hogs. Weather looks iffy this weekend, (except for maybe Friday?) - thinking of possibly hitting the GC autox.

Thanks Av - that was my initial diagnosis. - I don't think we can rely on just drawings for such a difficult ID - if you look at the yellow mouth pic I found on prior page - it shows no irregularities in the body pattern whatsoever. Only dots.
I had a few people declare it a black including the owner - but I did not initially see clear indication of squares on the upper back, but now when I look again carefully I believe I can see a faint pattern of squares - making me doubt weather it is a yellow mouth and so possibly a black or as Jim suggests possibly a yellow fin / yellow edge:
-
Looks like a yellow edge grouper. Look at the pectoral fins.
Ah! food for thought! ... now there's an interesting notion.
the body pattern did not conform to Yellow fin pics that I have seen, and so did not give that any consideration. - BUT yes, the pec fin coloration has a distinct yellow border! ... but that also seems to be the case in the upper lip :confused1:
-
Nice! ... Sup Seaweed!?
-
I believe that you are right - I can just see a very faint pattern of squares. The yellow mouth pattern is very even with no interruptions whatsoever. But it is great to examine the different species in detail like this!

It is a threaded back up shaft I bought, (still have the original flopper) so I just thought I'd try something new. It was pricier than I expected! $80 or so, but I can opt to use it or swap out. I compared about 4 tips before I chose the Riffe. It just had all the features that went best with my set up - which just coincedentally is Riffe gun and shaft!
Ugh ... weather is nice - too bad I have year end work to finish!!!:(
