i cant have sound on videos at work, but did they mention how exactly he came to be so close to a 12' bull without realizing it? was there terrible vis, that area usually has great viz and I have seem big sharks out there, but never that big.

That hits close to home in more ways than one. I wonder if the shark was spotted before the fish was shot or if it came as a complete surprise.

I think its a good idea to keep your eyes open and not dive alone.

Tourniquet would probably be the best thing to have on a Kayak.

In case of massive bleeding this is what you need to do:
#1 Leave the wetsuit on if the bite in in the torso region. Most open cell wetsuits provide mild pressure and act as a second skin. The only time you should cut the wetsuit off is to identify the source of the bleeding, and this should only be done when you have blood control materials readily available.
#2 Once you identify the source of bleeding apply direct pressure as the initial treatment. This pressure should be extremely heavy...to the point that it hurts the casualty.
#3 Begin to contact EMS and keep casualty as calm as possible. Elevated heart rates= increased blood loss.
#4 If the bleeding is from torso- Continue with direct pressure.
If the bleeding is from a limb- Apply tourniquet as high as possible on the limb.(and no, having a tourniquet placed on a limb will not cause you to loose that limb, that is a myth.).
This means that if you get your foot bit off, the tourniquet should be placed by the groin.
#5 Calm the F@ck down, remember your reaction directly affects the casualty's survival rate.
#6 Lay casualty down, and elevate the legs. Keep the legs elevated. This helps keep blood in the torso during shock.

that it boys and girls, its as simple as that. Trust me, I do this crap for a living.

That's funny, they still teach that a TQ usually results in limb loss in paramedic school. I'm not trying to start a pissing match, just illustrating how entrenched the myth is in EMS. Thankfully I've always been able to stop even arterial bleeding without a TQ.

I think you hit on one of the biggest things that we've all missed - the "Calm the **** down" point. I'd say in the vast majority of calls I was ever on, as medics, we were more security blankets than anything else....

Hate to break it to you brother, they are teaching out dated material. Limb loss related to the use of tourniquets was a reality as little as 5 years ago, but medicine is constantly advancing.
The reason that tourniquets used to lead to limb loss is that back in the day we used to worry about Compartment syndrome developing. This is not an issue unless you are more then 2 hours away from a hospital. Also we have gotten extremely good at treating compartment syndrome, so this is no longer an issue. Now a days, if you loose a limb, its from infection or unrepairable trauma, not from the tourniquet.....
But then again what do I now, i'm just the retard with combat expience and the medical degree.

As far as what tourniquets do I use or carry. I prefer the McMillan and SOF tourniquets. I will try to have a few available for some of you guys to take home....at the very least I should be able to get a hold of some CAT tourniquets from NARP/NAF
