Went out today off Key Largo/Tavernier with JC and Brian. After working a lot lately and watching the beach cams being calm and flat, I had to take a day off and go spearing! Got in touch with JC when he posted up yesterday to find an extra few people, I knew we were going to have a great day!
Started the morning early and got to the ramp by 7:30. There were some really nasty clouds and heavier wind that picked up RIGHT when we got onto the water! Just my luck.... we dodged a few storms, found an area and started chumming and working the area hard.
I spotted a black on the bottom from a way out and started drifting silently towards him. He spooked and started running away, so i stopped pursuit and just hovered. He immediately stopped and took up a position right underneath me. I dropped and took a shot and let the grouper take the floatline from me. He rocked up, and I went down and retrieved him.
After securing the gag, I swam back to where the grouper was and saw a Yellow Jack swimming near the bottom. I dropped and STONED him! My first big Yellow Jack!
JC also got this permit when he freedove 75ft to the top of the spot where he popped this permit. It was the smaller one of the bunch, but they were super skittish and we were pushing our maximum depths!
What a great day on the water!!
