I have always thought Pargo were some of the most durable fish in the Cortez. Now I may have evidence.
Attached photos show Pargo I shot that had a broken single flopper tip buried just above its gill plate.
The tip is small maybe 2" , part of the shaft threads are still in place. The fish was totally healed up and healthy. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before?

Very interesting. Would also make a great addition to the http://spearfishing.world/gene…n/1357-fish-injuries.html thread.

the Stainless wing sure did hold up well compared to the carbon steel tip. (a guess)
The C steel plated maybe, but long gone with time.
Very interesting.

Any idea on the diameter of that shaft?
-
It looks like 1/4 thread. So maybe a 5/16 shaft?
-
looks like it was a pole spear tip. Congrats on a nice fish!

A friend shot a carp in a lake in Wyoming that had been speared through the head or shot through the head before. It had a healed up large hole through it that had moss growing out of it. Wish I had a picture! Hard to kill those stinking things.

Did you keep the tip for your collection to go with story?

I caught a king fish once, maybe 35lbs that had obviously been hooked before... one of his gills had been ripped out from him and pulled around the outside of his gill plate... could tell it was an old wound, but he was as healthy as ever... just sorry I never took any pics. Always believed that once a fish had its gills damaged, especially as bad as this king did, that there was no chance off survival, but that fish proved otherwise. Also know a guy that shot a massive jewfish here in Trinidad, that had 5 broken spears in him and was just fine until he met the right hunter, or in his case the wrong one.

Nice!
I once shot a wahoo with a Rapala pearcing.... :rolleyes1::laughing:

The guy who tried to nail a med size Pargo with what looks like a US Divers or discount dive catalog pole spear tip is a idiot or a young newbi kid. :nono:
Cheers, Don

I agree who ever left the tip in this fish had no Idea what they were getting into. It was probably some one off one of the sail or motor boats that periodically stop in the anchorage near this particular pargo hole. -
Its likely this fish saw the MAKO logo approaching and decided to stand its ground...

LOL
What red blooded spearo wouldn't attempt a shot at a nice fish like this with anything a little more potent than a barbecue fork
