Calling in fish

  • Hey guys. During your Aspetto and you're lying on the bottom, or just cruising around, do you grunt or do any calls to call in fish?

I was out there today and messing around and did some deep grunts and some small hogs came in lol

  • I have had luck periodically in getting Red Snapper to turn back towards me (when they had been moving away) by scratching in the sand with my knife or spearpoint. The snapper I get in this area almost always have crabs and mantis shrimp in their bellies, so maybe there's a connection.

  • I grunt almost every dive around here. Depends on the area though. Around here fish will haul ass towards you if they are close. In other areas they could care less.

  • I hear Pantoja often doing that grouper call, can't say if it's been productive. I decided for myself that grunting is not worth the bottom time loss. I'm still very interested to know if it works you guys.

  • I don't grunt often maybe on rocky bottoms..but on sandy bottoms i like to dig in the sand and get a hand full of sand and throw it up..the mutton's specially will turn around and come see what is for dinner...lots of iron for them :D, grouper and all kind of snappers get curious.

  • the one time i tried to grunt underwater i somehow got sea water in my mouth and almost threw up at -35ft hahaha, needless to say i have not pursued that move...

jeff what you say makes a lot of sense...worth reflecting on for a while to think about other habits we know of that we could gain an advantage with

I've thrown up sand after spooking hogfish out and they left the area for 5 mins. When i came back, there he was, eating out of the spot where I messed the sand up!

  • I almost never grunt but have done the sand trick, crushed clams and sea urchins or leave a stringer of fish on the bottom an them come later to see what's checking out the stringer (got some nice groupers, pargos and a shark once).

  • that's cool too...I would be worried about having my stringer get stolen by one of our fiesty nurse sharsk...just ask Hau about wrestling sharks to keep his $1.99 chum bag hahahah or hearing his anchor get dragged across the reef by a nurse :)

  • I croak in local White Sea bass while using aspetto style hunting, strumming the bands can also work.
The Tahitian's taught me to call in fish and they are masters, you just have to be careful who you call in, while in blue water. Try taking a short gun down and shooting it, when the big AJ's come in to check it out you have a very easy shot with your main gun.

Been wondering... how do you handle your gun after you've fired one shot? :confused1:

After I shoot, I do the normal process of slinging my arm through the bands. Doesn't seem that smart an idea with a loaded gun - since the business end of the shaft would be pointed at the back of your head. Is it rigged differently?

I'll do a Double Trouble thread someday, My gun has a system that includes a leash and adjustable out rigger
clip brake away. DT has carbon pods with ports for adjustable mass, with water and lead shot. I have it rigged to point down with the lower shaft in. My whole dive system has developed over a long period of time to match my diving style and the fish I hunt.

That brings up more questions than it answers. :laughing3:
