A Return Home: ChumFest 2011

  • As we move through the grind of our daily lives there is much we all take for granted. Technology in all fields have made our lives much easier or in certain cases perhaps more complicated, but we all can agree indoor plumbing beats shitting in the woods. The ability to capture certain moments in our lives via photographic snapshots or HD videos allows us to relive those memories throughout the rest of our lives and in many cases they travel down generations and give us a glimpse of years past or loved ones lost.

Pictures allow us to revisit a place we yearn to go again. I was told once that life is about simple moments and while agree, it’s moments that transcend into nostalgic memories that are generally the ones that stay with us forever. Perhaps it is why nostalgia’s origin translates to A Return Home.

    Day 1

Dove Friday with Ed and Jason off Big Pine Key. Viz was about 40 feet and dove one spot that produced most of the fish. Top was at in about 55, but dropped off down to the 70 feet range. We limited out on blacks then were taunted throughout the rest of the afternoon with two keeper groupers that must have known the quota was filled. Hammered the mutts pretty good as well as a few other quarry.

  • Day 2

I was not able to dive on Saturday due to a wedding I could not afford to miss. The crew was augmented by GR and Dave. I received a taunting text message during my brother's wedding with this picture and the words: One grouper away from limiting...

  • Day 3

Drove back down Sunday morning and the crew was joined by the Diving Dutchman (Gerald). With GR and Jason chasing the big blacks in the deep, we dove most of the day in the 75-100 range. We once again were one black away from our boat limit.

  • Nice report! Looks like a lot of fun and good memorable times with friends.

You guys just anchor up and throw out those baits? That sounds like a lot of work but you guys produced! Thanks for sharing.

  • Nice opening thoughts Rolo, you have a nice clan of speros there.:thumbsup2: Cool post mate.

    Harry,

The cast netting was not really that cumbersome or time consuming. Ed stays there for two months in the summer taking out his customers, so by the time we get there, he has already identified where bait is accumulating. The operation is quite seamless and pays dividends on the reef. The anchoring was feasible as there was absolutely zero current during our days diving.

    Thanks for the comments.

That makes perfect sense. It would take me so long to find bait. I can throw a large cast net very well too but i dont think my gf would like tossing over those fish. :laughing3:

Great intro btw just like everyone mentioned. Looks like you had the best day judging from the pics.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • No surprise with the "Dream Team" there. Between Ed's chum and knowledge, and GR and Jason diving, wow. The fish never stood a chance. 100' for those guys is a cakewalk.

Don't underestimate the rest of the crew. Everyone shot their share and actually Dave and Ed shot most of the nice fish on Saturday.

I don't know Dave, and Ed is no slouch but I've only dove with him once. I didn't mean any disrespect to any of those guys.
