Speardiver carbon fins roll call

  • I went from leaderfins carbons to the C100's. Night and day.
The only fins I have used that have comparable preformance are my specialfins hybrid professionals, the c100's are a little bit better still and about half the price...

  • I am making an quick comparison with 5 well known carbon fins (Omer, DiveR, HST, C4, C90) .
It is only based on my experience with these fins after several months and in some case years (whatever might that worth).
The C90 is one of the newest addition and I need more time with it, but its doing pretty darn good so far.
I will post the review with pictures in 2weeks.
For now, the least I have to say that I am happy with it.
    Aye! for sure :D

  • Finally got my C100s wet. WOW! These things are crazy efficient. I was down to 50' in the same number of kicks it takes me to get to 30' with my plastic Cressi's. Big kudos to Dan for making such an awesome fin!

I also got a few compliments on them at the beach as a diver was exiting the water. But he was just as amazed to see an Aeris F10, the carbon fins, a wood gun, and my GoPro. :cool2:

    Cheers!
    :toast:

  • First dive with my C90's! What a difference! So much more drive than my old Escalpez fins. I did scratch them on the rocky exit :(

It's like the bed of a new pick up truck, now you don't need to worry about waxing it.:D

  • My experience in selecting new fins...
For years, I had been using Dive-R medium FG blades in Picasso footpockets (fp's). Last June, I switched to Omer Stingray fp's with the same Dive-R blades. The Stingrays fit my feet very nicely and I thought I'd be content with that combo forever. However, after joining this forum three months ago, I became tempted by all the good reports about Speardiver fins. My feet are US size 16, so I'm limited on which fp's fit me. The Pathos do not. I ended up selecting Mares Razor fp's. Their tendons are quite soft, so I went with Dan's suggestion of medium-hard Speardiver blades.

I finally got to try them Friday after work. I took both pairs of fins for comparison. The first difference I noticed performance-wise is my Razor/Speardivers feel much easier to kick than my Stingray/Dive-R's. I did several dives to about 50 ft. I kicked down in my usual manner (relaxed, not racing) except I kicked all the way to the bottom instead of drifting down after I was negative. My number of kicks going down were the same for both pair, but I felt less strain on my legs with the Razor/Speardivers. I imagine less strain means less O2 consumed and more bottom time. (I couldn't measure that day because my watch battery died.)

I'm very happy with my new fins, but wish I had the means to try other Speardiver blade stiffness and fp combinations to see if there's something that I'd like even better. Maybe someday. Meanwhile, I look forward to putting these through their paces.

Many thanks to Dan for his good advice and patience with me!

  • Look whose christmas came early this year!

Custom made! Cant wait to get it wet! Unfortunately gonna have to wait a couple of weeks. Ill give a report later. Aloha

  • Three months of bottom hunting. Not as pretty as they were out of the box but they work very well. My wife says I'm stupid for scratching up a nice, new pair of fins. She doesn't complain about the fish she has to clean though. :)

  • Just got my C100's in the mail today. Mounted them on my HD's and hitting the kelp Sunday.
Perfect fit in the pockets and rails.
    Thank you Dan,
    Trace

  • Just placed my order for a pair of Speardiver c90 Medium stiffness blades to mount in my Capt Nemo pockets. Big thanks to Dan for taking the time to work through all my questions with me and getting these out the door to me on a greatly expedited schedule so I can have them for my trip to Hawaii (leaving Saturday!).

I'll be sure to report back with a review when I get the chance.

  • We usually we see pics of new fins, with the exception of Hank's who may have started a trend :) New fins are great for marketing, lustrous carbon fiber appeals to the eye. The truth is that if used by any serious bottom hunter the fins don't stay pretty for long, but this doesn't affect their performance.

I want to share with you Pantoja's fins. He came by my place today with some gear to tune up for an upcoming trip. His Speardiver/Pursuit fins were among the very first batch I had 3 years ago. For those of you who don't know Pantoja, simply put he's a gear abuser ;) His focus is always on hunting, not on keeping gear in mint shape. I've seen him dive with the same bent shaft for months, it would veer off on long shots, he couldn't be bothered straightening it or getting another one, so he just got closer to the fish. Still he'd put twice the amount of fish on the boat than all the other divers combined. I'm not exaggerating here, those who have seen it know. Anyways for the fins to last 3 years with him is IMO a true testament to their durability.

In this pic you can see that the zip tie used to secure the blade in the footpocket has been replaced by fishing line. According to Pantoja he lost the zip tie somehow when he was diving in Cuba. He found some old fishing line on the beach and used it in place of the zip tie. It worked fine so he never bothered changing it out. The ends of the line are not even trimmed, that drives me

A few months ago I noticed a crack on the edge of one of his fins. A crack like that can only happen from direct impact jamming it edge first into rocks or some part of the boat. It was interesting for me to note again that the crack didn't run. Finally the piece broke off, so today I reshaped the front edge of the fin with a belt sander, and now the edge is solid again.

  • The scratches can be made to disappear with a spray can of automotive clear coat. I wouldn't bother. If it's done a few times a layer will build up, and that does affect performance. Instead lets be proud of our scratched fins, proof that we don't just talk spearfishing on the internetz :)

  • Ordered a set of c90's for Christmas and am super happy with the performance, a huge step up from my old cressi gara's. Here is the result of the first outing with them -

  • Just ordered mine!

I've been diving with Picasso Black Team fins for a while. I'll post about the difference these fins make after I get them in the water.
