Had a nice mixed bag today. I was diving 85ft, and I was feeling really strong. I shot a couple snappers right off the bat, and I boated them fairly quickly. I did my normal 2:30 min breathup after my gun was loaded, and I was ready for another go. I dropped down to the bottom and waited for some snappers to come around. I didn't see anything worth shooting so i was ready to come up. Then i saw a nice fat gag about 30ft away at the edge of the reef. He saw me and then ducked down below the reef. I knew that was my chance. I sprinted over there as fast as i could because i knew he couldn't see me. As i got closer and closer, i was getting ready for the gag to pop up from underneath the ledge to see what i was doing. Sure enough, I was right. He popped up, and I took my shot. I thought he was going to be a lot closer but i'll take what i can get. I took about a 5m shot, and hit the fish right in the brain. I saw that the spear didn't pass all the way through so i decided to loosen the drag to almost freespool. I boated the fish and began removing the spear from its head. It was stuck in its head and I couldn't pull it out or push it through without risking a bent spear. I took out my knife and carved it out. That did the trick. I am glad i sharpen my Rob Allen spears.
After several drops on the same spot, i was laying on the bottom, and i see this big king out of range. He sees me but doesn't seem too interested. I was going to try to swim to it but decided not too. I just sat there motionless hoping the curiosity would get the best of him. And it did! He made a turn and came my way. I took my shot and my reel started spinning. By the time i got to the surface, the fish had taken quite a bit of line from my hammerhead reel. I let the fish run as much as it wanted so it wouldn't tear. After it took about 150ft of line, it stopped running. I pulled in all the line and boated the fish. He didn't fight much after the first run.
