Diving with Jenyie

  • July 31/2010

Myself, Gerald, Jenyie, Nider, and driver Julio went out on Jenyie's boat. Conditions were good; sea flat building to about 2ft towards the end of the day, little or no current, rashguard temp water, could see shadow of bottom structure in 60-70ft.

We dove 60-70 most of the day, a mix of artificial and reef, and finished the day in 45-50. Slowly but surely the cooler was filled with fine examples of our local fish. I'll let the guys tell their stories. For my part I was content with my performance after a long time out of the water. I went back to my old one piece teak wood gun and every reasonable shot I took was good, including a nice 9lb mutton. I hope Gerald chimes in with the pics.

Jenyie, thanks for taking us out.

  • Nice Mutton Dan, and it looks like you could water ski on the way back. The coastal water here is piss cold.

  • Hi Guys, sorry for not chiming in earlier with the pics. I was babysitting ;)

I managed to dislocate my shoulder on the first spot while donning my wetsuit. This royally sucked, and kinda ruined the diving for me. The others though, put quite a hurting on the fish.

    Here are some other pics.

Thanks for the invite. I'll try to contribute a bit more next time ;)

Dan, PM me your email address, I'll send you the hi-res versions.

    Dive safe,

  • Looks like it was a good trip! Gerald that last pic you posted is great. I like how it really shows the finer color details in the fish.:toast:

  • I agree, that's why I felt really good about the one iI got, He was staying ahead of me, moving away in typical mutton fashion never offering a broadside. It was a good stalk and good shot, I had to time it in anticipation of his shallow turn.

One almost surprising thing was that we didn't see any mackerels. There are always mackerels at some point in the day, and I like to shoot them to feed to my dogs. I was a little bummed that there was going to be no fish to give to my dogs. When we got back to the dock there were a couple of huge tarpon feeding on discarded fish carcasses. As I took a closer look I saw in the shallow water just past the ramp what looked like an entire bonito. I waded into the stinky waist high water and pulled the fish out, it was indeed a whole bonito, approx 10lb, with just a small piece of flesh cut out near the tail. My dogs are having fish dinner for a few days :thumbsup2:

  • Diving with Jenyie and crew Saturday. Flat seas, rash guard temp water, north to south current, good vis north of the inlet and green to the south. Good diving conditions but didn't see too many fish. Jenyie and Nider tag teamed this very fat mutton which holed up on sight, this is something new to me as I never seen one hole up unless hurt. This mutton turned out to have swallowed a small moray eel. The meal was so big for it that there was not enough room for the complete eel in its stomach, and the head of it was sticking out towards the throat, it was the only part of the eel that wasn't digested. Some other fish were taken including mackerels, a big trigger, and a nice hog.
